Brazil’s defense force has intensified defensive actions along its northern border as it monitors the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela, the country’s defense ministry reported.

The Ministry has been monitoring the situation and defensive actions have been intensified in the northern border region of the country promoting a greater military presence.

Venezuelans will vote in a referendum on Sunday to decide on if the country should move to issue Venezuelan ID cards and citizenship to residents of Essequibo.

Guyana has taken to the ICJ to ask the court to not allow Venezuela to the proceed with some of the questions on the referendum. However, Venezuela’s government has said it will go ahead no matter what.

The claims Venezuela has been making to Guyana’s Essequibo region heightened after Venezuela issued a statement protesting Guyana’s offshore oil bidding stating that companies seeking up to bid for the eight blocks will not have rights to explore the maritime areas, which would be subject to international claims.
