The owner of the day care at Ogle, East Coast Demerara where seven-month-old Oriya Gravesande died on March 21st, 2023 was taken before the Sparendaam Magistrates court today, charged for manslaughter. She was remanded to prison.
Denise Benn appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court where she was not required to plead to the charge. She was represented by attorney at law Dexter Todd.
Todd argued that the charge was only instituted because of public pressure and because Benn is the owner of the day care.
A post morten examination conducted on the body of the child determined that she died from haemorrhaging and suffocation after she fell off the bed she was on and became entangled between the sheets.
The case was postponed to May 10th, 2023.
