As the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths continues to rise and take a toll on Guyana’s Healthcare System, the Minister of Education has made yet another decision to not host Grade 4, 6, and 9 Exams this year.
This announcement was made by the Chief Education Officer, Dr. Marcel Hutson, as students continue around Guyana to prepare for the exams.
“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the general public that due to the adverse effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic, on the education sector the national grade 2,4 and 9 exams and placement examination will not be written in 2021,” Dr. Hutson said.
Students preparing for the exams will now have to halt their studies. However, according to the CEO, it is a decision that came in order to keep students protected from the virus.
“We recognized the hardship that students have been experiencing in terms of their readiness and preparedness for these examinations, and we also recognized the need for us to also ensure that our students are safe,” Dr. Hutson insisted.
With the exams being canceled the CEO said that private school students will be placed in schools that reflect their results from the grade 3 exams and other students will be placed in schools A and B that are close to their home.
He added that this process will be insured to be done right away by the Deputy CEO along with the Region Education Officer.
This leaves face-to-face interaction for every grade except Grades 10, 11, and 12.
Guyana has recorded over 12,000 positive covid-19 cases so far and the death to now sits at 277.
