A 24-year-old man is expected to spend his next 12 years behind bars after he raped a 13-year-old girl during her birthday celebration.
The rapist, Kemo Calvin Chase, appeared before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Suddie High Court, Essequibo Coast when the sentence was handed down.
Chase was found guilty of the crime just last month and was on remand until today when the sentence was handed down.
Despite the verdict and sentence, Chase continued to plead his innocence and that the story was fabricated by the victim.
Chase’s attorney also begged for a suspended sentence for Chase, noting that the young man can be rehabilitated.
However, Justice Beharry pointed that Chase showed no remorse and it’s on that basis and while considering the physical and psychological trauma the crime had on the victim, that the sentence was handed down.
As such, a sentence of 12 years was handed down to Chase for the raping of a 13-year-old girl during her birthday celebration in 2013.
In a statement to the court, the victim told the court that she was frequently raped by Chase which made her feel “hopeless and unloved” on the occasion of every single birthday she has had since then.
