Region Four with one of the highest vaccination rates has the most deaths and positives Covid-19 cases when compared to any other region.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, during his COVID-19 update, yesterday, Thursday.
It was noted that of over 34,000 cases, Region Four has had some 16,000 positive cases, and of the more than 880 deaths in the country, Region Four also has over 400 deaths.
According to also to statistics from the Ministry of Health some 375,640 persons have received the first dose of the vaccine, while some 235,081 have been fully vaccinated.
Of those numbers Region, Four has 175,578 persons that were administered the first dose while 112,133 people are fully vaccinated.
Minister Anthony is insisting that those who are fully vaccinated will have a better chance of fighting COVID-19 than can lead to death.
“Our total number of deaths (up to Thursday) is 887. Most of these persons were unvaccinated. A few of them were partially vaccinated and there are very, very few who would have been fully vaccinated.
“Those who were fully vaccinated and died were those who had poor prognosis because of several comorbidities. But generally, the majority of persons, who have died so far are those being unvaccinated,” Minister Antony noted.
He said if people are not vaccinated then as time goes by Guyana will continue to see more hospitalizations and deaths.
“We have to understand one thing, and that is we are going to see a lot more cases among the unvaccinated people. Unfortunately, apart from them getting infected, among the unvaccinated you will also see more hospitalization and you are going to see more deaths.
“Unfortunately, this is the situation where if people are not vaccinated we are going to see more people getting hospitalized and dying from COVID-19,” Dr. Anthony added.
Since the introduction of the vaccine there has been some hesitancy among citizens.
The Government is fighting the virus with the rollout of the vaccination and has policies that seek to have more people vaccinated.
But there has been some level of rejection from sections of the public who would have deemed the vaccination drive as being one that is forcing them to have a vaccine. There is that feeling that they have no choice.
