A 40-year-old taxi driver was arraigned on Friday for the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Eon Weeks of Lot 1 Durban and Smyth Streets, Georgetown, appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabio Azore, where he pleaded not guilty and was placed on bail of $75,000.
The case was adjourned to November 9 and transferred to the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court.
According to reports from police, around 13:30 hrs. on Tuesday October 13, a motor car driven by the taxi driver and also occupied by a 20-year-old woman, was stopped by ranks at a road block on the Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
The driver and the woman were searched but nothing was found on them. A search of the trunk of the vehicle revealed two large bags containing seven compressed parcels of transparent plastic with leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis.
