The 12th PARLIAMENT OPENED WITH THE APPOINTMENT OF Manzoor Nadir as Speaker of the National Assembly. The Speaker’s first task was to preside over the swearing in of the Members of Parliament.

He was followed by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and the other PPP nominated members. There were 33 in all. This was followed by the swearing in of the opposition members.

Mr Harmon was followed by the other members of the opposition side—31 in all. And Lennox Schuman, the representative of the small parties alliance.

Schuman who appeared in what he considered traditional Amerindian wear, began his oath with a call to his ancestors.

Nadir then made his maiden address. “It is with immense humility and gratitude that I accept your nomination to this esteemed position. My sincerest thanks the Almighty, to you honourable members, and to all friends, colleagues, who have been part of my public life.”

“To the new Parliamentarians, first I congratulate you on your respective appointments.”

Lennox Schuman was appointed Deputy Speaker. His appointment prompted this from the Prime Minister. He had earlier congratulated Nadir.

“I extend similar congratulations to Mr Lennox Schuman on his election as Deputy Speaker of the House.   For Amerindian Members of the House, and for all Amerindians, this being September 1, the start of Amerindian Heritage Month,  I extend special special congratulations to you.

Schuman’s appointment was not without controversy. There was a division in the house. The government side with its 33 seats and Schuman with his solitary vote prevailed.

And the House paid tribute to the former Members of the House who have died.
