According to a release from the United States Embassy in Guyana, U.S. Navy Admiral, Craig Faller, commander of U.S. Southern Command, will visit Guyana from January 11 to January 13 as part of the United States’ continued commitment to Guyana and its security.
The Command is one of the U.S Department of Defense’s six geographically-focused unified commands with responsibility for U.S. military operations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
The Admiral is scheduled to meet with President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and Brigadier Godfrey Bess. He will discuss the bilateral security partnership between the United States and Guyana.
The Admiral will also take part in the signing of an Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement between the militaries of Guyana and the U.S, which will facilitate exchanges of goods and services to support future bilateral defense cooperation.
The defense partnership between Guyana and the United States includes collaboration against regional threats and challenges, capacity-building engagements, bilateral training, expertise exchanges, exercises, and participation in military education programs.
During the visit of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in 2020, a Shiprider agreement was signed which allows for maritime cooperation between Guyana and the United States.
The last visit from the Southern Command’s top military leader to Guyana was in 2017, when Guyana became the first South American nation to host the Caribbean Nations Security Conference.
