The government of Guyana has taken note of an action taken by the president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro after an organic law was signed by Venezuela to defend Guyana Essequiba.

In a press release, it was stated that this attempt by Venezuela to annex more than two-thirds of Guyana’s sovereign territory and make it part of Venezuela is violation of the most fundamental principles of international law enshrined in the United Nations Charter and that such a move also contradicts the Joint Argyle Declaration signed in december last year.

The move also questions Venezuela’s obligation to abide by the principles of the Argyle Declaration.

The government has urged that if Venezuela wants to contest territory for Essequibo that the International court of Justice would be the best place to do so.

As such the government has put on notice the government of Venezuela, the government of the Caribbean community, the Secretary General Of The United Nations, the Secretary General Of The Organization Of The American States that Guyana will not countenance the annexation, seizure or occupation of any part of Guyana’s sovereign territory.
