The Infectious Diseases hospital which was recently commissioned at Liliendaal will open its doors tomorrow. This followed a decision that it would begin to house ill patients from tomorrow.

When he came to office as Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony was critical of the hospital.

“We would have seen that a new hospital has been launched. What we have there is an absolute disaster. We have spent $1.6 Billion and we literally have a shell.

“You have a building; there is no equipment, no bed. That building is supposed to house 197 beds.”

Dr Anthony added, “To utilize that building we will probably have to go and break those walls to install pipes and outlets.

“It’s a lot of money I imagine to go and renovate. I have a technical team that has started to look at some of those things and what we need to fix.”

It seems as if the tune has changed. All of a sudden the building is fit for use without one additional cent be

ing spent.

Today the government began scrambling to secure beds for the institution. It ordered that beds be removed from Leonora to equip the hospital. The Ministry of Health intends to house nearly 60 COVID-19 patients there from tomorrow.

Today there was a rush to test the generators on site. This hurried move has come in the wake of an exploding number of COVID-19 cases. There have been nearly 1,000 new cases for this month alone.
