At the Annual General Meeting of the Private Sector Commission on Monday, President Irfaan Ali said household assistance would be provided to aid families affected by COVID-19. This is in addition to the disbursement of funds to the health and education sectors.

The monetary value per household would be around $25,000 but no details were given on how the aid would be distributed.

President Ali said, “Before the end of this week I am going to announce some additional measures in relation to COVID. I’ve already instructed to have resources sent to the health sector, education sector and we’re working on a household intervention of about $25,000 per household.”

The President had previously announced that the government was seeking US$60 million in assistance to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The President also thanked the European Union, United Kingdom, and United States for their support and supply of resources.

He also called for the private sector to be included in the approach the country would take to deal with COVID-19.
