Informal housing settlements are continuously being minimized as over 120 families in the former Charity Squatting Area on the Essequibo Coast have experienced a substantial improvement in their lives with the establishment of new roads.

The roads facilitate easier travel and better access to schools for their children.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, joined by a team from the Central Housing and Planning Authority and Guyana Water Incorporated, conducted an inspection of the infrastructure developments in the area recently.

Following the regularization of the area in 2022, the first set of residents was presented their land titles by President Irfaan Ali.

With these titles, some of the residents reported that they have been able to secure a loan to renovate their property. The Minister further stated that the government’s initiatives are geared towards improving families and livelihoods.

Some $200 million for infrastructure development was allotted to the community for the construction of 2.5 kilometers of concrete roads, a new bridge, and the installation of water and electricity services.
