InterCaribbean Airways, after launching its airline business here in Guyana just weeks ago, has landed its first flight to Guyana.
On the tarmac of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the first aircraft landed with some 48 passengers on board including Minister of Tourism and International Transport Senator Lisa Cummins as an airline to signal its start to do business here in Guyana.
With the first fight landing in Guyana, Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Sadler, Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond; and Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, welcomed those coming to Guyana.
Speaking at the launch of the airline here in Guyana, CEO Sadler said that the airline being here shows that the company has confidence in the economy of Guyana and it stands as fruit to a five-year talk of coming to Guyana.
“Today is a day we have been working towards for some time. I believe it was almost five years ago when we started to have conversations about Guyana and the possibilities and where and when and how we could get to Guyana.
“The pandemic has been both kind and cruel to the industry, but at the same time it opens the doors of opportunity for InterCaribbean to then further our reach into the Caribbean,” Mr. Sandler noted.
He said the aim of the airline is to do business in Guyana and to contribute to its economy by having Guyana directly connected to working with the airline.
InterCaribbean which operates in some 27 cities across the Caribbean is set to connect Guyana with the rest of the nations through straight and intransitive plane flights.
InterCaribbean has been notably operating in the Caribbean for over 30 years with their operations based in Turks and Caicos.
With a new airline stepping into the market, Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, who has been pushing for tourism to be Guyana’s main product that Guyana has to sell to the world, maintained that companies are seeing this potential and have shown relative confidence in the economy.
“We are here in Guyana continuing to be committed to tourism, as one of our largest export and highest export earnings here in Guyana.
“We remain committed to our tourism product and for this initiative, this launching, I wish to congratulate InterCaribbean that it has seen that Guyana is on a growth trajectory that is the fastest growing economy in this hemisphere.
“Eyes are turned to Guyana. For the leisure traveler and the business traveler, Guyana is a prime stop and prime place for these investments. We congratulate InterCaribbean for taking the leap.”
Understanding the need for togetherness against bigger markets, especially in tourism, Minister of Tourism and International Transport Senator Lisa Cummins applauded Guyana on its quest to become a tourism giant.
She said Barbados will continue to work with Guyana to ensure that business remains with the Caribbean, especially through tourism.
Over the years, Guyana started a push towards the tourism sector, even with the finding of oil. It is creating a diverse economy in which all can benefit from the wealth that will come to Guyana.
