Teen killed, sister injured while riding electric bike

17-year-old Bibi Sophia Mohammed is now dead after an accident which occurred on the Coldingen Public Road.
Maria Mohamed, 16, was riding an electric bike with Bibi Mohamed as the pillion rider both of lot 366 Non-Pariel Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.
Rickford Beckles, a 67-year-old driver from Annandale, East Coast Demerara was driving Motor Lorry GRR 3130, owned by R and B Investment Mohammed.
He reported that he approached the main road, stopped and observed the traffic before going onto the access road. The driver said that when he drove off, he felt his lorry ‘bump up’. When he came out he saw two girls lying on the road next to an electric cycle.
Persons rushed to the scene, and the girls were picked up and escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were seen and examined by a Doctor. On arrival, Bibi Mohammed was pronounced dead, and Maria Mohammed is undergoing medical attention.
The driver is presently in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Contrary to reports circulating on social media the Guyana revenue authority has stated that it has not commenced the registration of electric bikes, discussions are being held between the Guyana revenue authority and the police force and other agencies regarding the requirements for the importation, registration licensing and insurance for the vehicles.
