An 88-year-old who would usually ask the public for assistance at the traffic lights at Avenue of the Republic was yesterday crushed to death by a motor lorry. The driver claimed that someone pushed him into the path of the truck.
That accident victim is said to be identified as Sandy Adonis a resident La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Reports are that Motor Lorry GMM 3568 with Trailer TTT 5330, Driven by Karan Balbad of La Parfaite Harmonie was proceeding south along Avenue of the Republic and came to a stop at the traffic light located at the intersection of Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street.
During his stop, a red motorcar with several unknown individuals stopped alongside the trailer of the motor lorry. The now-dead pedestrian approached the left front passenger side of the said red motorcar and was interacting with the person in the passenger seat.
As the traffic light changed to green the motor lorry started to move off and the individual who was seated in the front passenger seat of the said red car allegedly pushed the pedestrian who fell backwards, under the trailer which rolled over his body.
As a result, Adonis was crushed by the truck and died at the scene. Adonis received injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
The body was escorted to Lyken Funeral Parlour where it is awaiting a Post Mortem Examination.
A breathalyzer test was also conducted on the driver of the lorry and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. However, the driver remains in custody and the investigation continues.
