The Ministry of Labour hosted a one-day seminar to educate individuals and businesses on workplace legislation, to ensure that the country’s labour laws are upheld in the workplace.

It is also intended for employers and employees to have a mutually beneficial relationship.

It focused on laws governing the national minimum wage, probationary periods and paid leave, workplace safety and health, overtime payments, severance pay, termination of employment, inspections and record-keeping, and reporting incidents of child labour.

According to a Press Release from the Ministry, Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, told participants that the purpose of the seminar is to not only provide them with a better understanding of their rights as workers, but also to safeguard them in the event of a future difficulty.

He emphasised that protecting the rights and well-being of workers across the country is a job that the Labour Ministry takes seriously, and that any employer, whether private or public, will face consequences, if they violate the country’s labour laws since “the law is for everyone.”

According to the press release, the Labour Ministry is ready to advocate for workers’ rights to maintain a healthy and safe working environment, and he urged agencies to collaborate with the ministry to support and promote compliance with such labour regulations.

So far, in the first quarter of 2024, the Labour Ministry has attracted over one hundred entities, including government ministries, agencies, and private sector firms, which employs 24, 916 employees, through its labour seminar.
