No firm decision taken on increases requested by teachers following meeting with Ministry of education…

MOE Concerned about teacher absenteeism and punctuality, poor performing schools.

 

Following the meeting between the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers Union yesterday the Education Ministry has stated that during the meeting, the GTU and the MoE identified 27 issues to be tabled for discussion.

Following this, the two teams agreed on the order in which the matters will be addressed.

The first issue tabled for discussion was the establishment of a Terms of Reference for the meetings. After deliberations, it was agreed that that there will not be a signed Terms of Reference, however, both parties agreed that at the end of each meeting, two representatives of each negotiation team and two witnesses will sign the minutes.

According to a document shared by the GTU some of the matters identified for discussion by the GTU were salary matters, the 2% difference in salary for 2017 and 2018, and clothing allowance increase amongst others.

The Ministry of Education also stated that teacher absenteeism and punctuality, poor performing schools, continuous professional education, completion of syllabus are to be discussed.

The Ministry of Education reiterates its commitment to continuing dialogue with the Guyana Teachers’ Union. Discussions have produced several noteworthy results that will benefit teachers, children, and the system as a whole.

At the end of the meeting no firm stand was made on any of the items highlighted. The next meeting between the two parties is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 09:30am.
