Police are investigating the alleged murder in West Berbice

Police are investigating the alleged murder of Odit Persaud Thom, a 45-year-old Labourer from No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice.

The incident allegedly took place sometime between March 2 and March 4, 2024 at No. 41 Backdam, West Coast Berbice.

Enquiries disclosed that Thom used to take care of cattle in the back dam for several persons, including Rennision Mitchell, a 28-year-old from Seafield Village, WCB. The deceased was staying at a camp located at Seafield Backdam, WCB, where the animals are kept.

According to Mitchell, his cattle along with other cattle under the care of Thom were impounded at Weldaad Police Station on March 3, 2024 by Rajeshwar Mohan called ‘Old Bull’, a rice farmer from Foulis, WCB.

As such, Mitchell went into the backdam to look for Thom but did not find him at the camp. On March 4, 2024) he and other cattle farmers continued their search and found Thom’s motionless body floating in a trench at No. 41 Backdam. This trench separates the rice fields from the savannah.

The body was fished out by the Police and found in a state of decomposition. It was observed that the deceased sustained chop wounds to both arms and the head.

The deceased had a haversack on his back which contained toiletries and his ID card.

Investigations continue.
