Two men who back in 2017 fatally stabbed a man to death during a robbery have been slapped with two life sentences after they both plead guilty.
The two, Affiba Yenkana, called ‘Dougla’, and Akeem Haymer, called ‘Curry’, appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon and pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
Yenkana and Haymer were charged for the January 20, 2017 death of Rawle Rodrigues at Croal Street, Stabroek during the course or furtherance of a robbery.
The two were set to be sentenced for their crime however Justice Kissoon maintained that a strong message must be sent to those who are perpetrators of such crimes since the act affected all aspects of society.
Mr. Kissoon also expressed his disappointment in the two men. He described the two as young and healthy men who have resorted to a life of crime, where they prey on citizens’ hard earnings.
The Judge added that on the other hand, while noting that two had been previously convicted of robbery and larceny, it seemed the two-man did not learn from their past but have graduated from the smaller crimes and have gone on to a serious one, in which life had been snuffed away from a family.
Justice Kissoon also maintained that on the day in question of the robbery the now dead man was attacked by three men while he was harmless.
The Judge later slapped a double life sentence on the two with the issue of parole being addressed after the two would have served 15 years in jail.
It was back in 2017, Rodrigues was at the Demico Roof Garden Building when he left to go home. On his way home in the vicinity of the Route 40 Bus Park, he was attacked and stabbed several times about his body while being robbed of his valuables.
The two suspects were later arrested and charged. A third suspect, Wayne Gilbert, was also charged. He now awaits his trial at the high court.
